About Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park

Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park was established to safeguard the natural and cultural environment surrounding the Kaunas Reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Lithuania, created in 1959 by damming the Nemunas River for hydroelectric power. Spanning several thousand hectares in Kaunas County, the park features a mosaic of forests, meadows, wetlands, and rocky outcrops, which support diverse flora and fauna. The reservoir and its shores provide critical habitats for numerous bird species, including migratory waterfowl, making it a key birdwatching area. The park's varied topography and tranquil waters offer excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, paddle sports, and fishing, attracting both nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore historic villages, archaeological sites, and traditional rural landscapes that tell the story of human settlement and interaction with the land in this region. Scenic viewpoints overlook the reservoir’s elongated curves, providing striking vistas particularly at sunrise and sunset. The park is also a notable site for seasonal festivals and eco-tourism initiatives, promoting environmental education and sustainable recreation. Its close proximity to Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city, makes it an accessible natural retreat for urban residents and tourists alike, blending cultural heritage with outdoor adventure.
